How to send a web page to your Kindle

Read web articles on your Kindle. Send any article or ChatGPT thread as a clean EPUB with images, in one click from Chrome. One minute of setup, no Calibre.

A long article is easier to finish on a Kindle than in a browser tab, whether it is a feature from a news site, a Medium or Substack post, or a piece of documentation. The screen is kinder to your eyes, there are no notifications, and the text is in a library you already open every day.

Amazon’s own route is to email the file as an attachment to your Kindle’s address. That works, but it means saving the page in a format Kindle reads well, opening your mail, attaching the file, and doing it again for every article. Web to File does it in one click: it turns the page into a clean EPUB and mails it to your Kindle for you.

This guide uses Web to File, a free Chrome extension. Setup takes about a minute and only happens once.

Set it up once

  1. Approve our sending address on Amazon. Amazon only delivers documents from addresses you approve. Open Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings, find the Approved Personal Document E-mail List, choose Add a new e-mail address, and add kindle@webtofile.pandaopus.com. The extension’s settings page has a direct link and a copy button for the address.
  2. Enter your Kindle address. In Web to File, open Settings → Send to Kindle and type your Kindle’s email address. You will find it in Amazon under Devices when you select your Kindle, or on the Kindle itself under Settings → Your Account → Send-to-Kindle Email. It ends in @kindle.com.
  3. Type the code from your Kindle. Web to File sends a tiny document to that address. Its title is a six-digit code. Type it into the panel and the Kindle is connected.

The code is how Web to File knows the Kindle is yours. Nothing can be sent to an address until someone who can see that Kindle’s library has typed its code.

Send a page

  1. Open the article you want to read.
  2. Choose Article mode in the side panel, so the navigation, ads, and comments are left behind.
  3. Choose EPUB, then click Send (the paper plane next to Download) and pick Kindle.

The book usually appears in your Kindle library within a few minutes. ChatGPT threads work the same way: open the conversation, and the whole thread is sent with each turn in order.

Why EPUB

EPUB is the format Kindle handles best. The text reflows to your font size and screen, the images are inside the file, and the headings become chapters you can jump between. PDF works too, but its pages keep a fixed size, so on a six-inch screen you end up zooming and panning.

If Markdown or an image format is selected when you send, Web to File sends an EPUB instead and says so in the Send menu, because those formats do not read well on a Kindle.

What happens to your file

Amazon accepts personal documents only by email, so the file has to be mailed. Web to File’s mail server receives it, sends it to your Kindle address, and deletes it right after, whether the send worked or not. It keeps no copy of your files and does not store your Kindle address, which stays in your browser; the server keeps only a one-way fingerprint of it, for send limits. Everything else about the page is still converted on your device. The privacy policy has the details.

Common problems

Nothing arrived. Check that kindle@webtofile.pandaopus.com is on your Approved Personal Document E-mail List and that you entered the Kindle’s own address, not your Amazon login. The Kindle also needs to be online to download it.

Amazon emailed you “Verify your Kindle document”. Amazon sometimes asks you to confirm a document from a new sender. Choose Verify Request in that email within 48 hours and the document is delivered.

The file is too large. Web to File emails files up to 25 MB. If an export is larger, Web to File downloads the file instead, and the message links to Amazon’s upload page, where you can send it from your browser.

It says the service is busy or paused. Sending has daily limits so the service stays reliable for everyone. When the service can’t send, Web to File downloads the file instead and links to Amazon’s upload page.

The code never came, or came late. Delivery to a Kindle can take a few minutes. Any code still in your library works, so there is no need to ask for several. If you asked more than once, type the newest one.

Does it cost anything? No. Sending to Kindle is free.

Amazon’s Send to Kindle extension isn’t working for me. Can I use this instead? Yes. Web to File doesn’t rely on Amazon’s extension or your Amazon sign-in. It converts the page in your browser and emails the EPUB to your Kindle address.

Which Kindles work? Any Kindle device or Kindle app that has a Send-to-Kindle address ending in @kindle.com.

Can I disconnect later? Yes. Settings → Send to Kindle → Disconnect removes the address from your browser and cancels the connection on our side. You can also remove our address from your approved list on Amazon.

Can I still download the file? Always. Send and Download sit side by side, and every export, sent or downloaded, stays in the export history.
