What’s new in Web to File

Every release of the Chrome extension, newest first. Chrome installs updates on its own, so there is nothing to download.

    Version 1.3.1

    New
    • Right-click and a shortcut. Right-click any page and choose "Export this page with Web to File", or press Alt+Shift+W (Option+Shift+W on a Mac) to open the panel. You can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
    • A short welcome page opens once after you install, showing how to pin the icon, how to open the panel, and what the three modes are for.
    Improved
    • The request to rate Web to File now comes after your third export, and it is written in all eleven store languages. If something went wrong, a lower rating takes you to a short feedback form instead.
    Fixed
    • In a narrow side panel, the Print and Send buttons are round again instead of slightly squashed.

    Send to Kindle

    New
    • Send to Kindle. Send any page to your Kindle as a clean EPUB, with its images and chapters, in one click. Setup takes about a minute: approve our sending address on Amazon, enter your Kindle address, and type the code that appears on your Kindle. EPUB and PDF are sent as they are; Markdown and images go as EPUB, and the Send menu says so. Amazon accepts documents only by email, so the file passes through our mail server and is deleted as soon as it has been sent. See the Kindle guide.
    • A Kindle send that did not go through stays in the export history with a Send again button.
    Improved
    • Messages after a send stay on screen until you close them, and "Not there?" opens the steps that usually fix a missing document.
    • The Send menu is easier to tell apart from the page behind it.
    • A new EPUB cover made for e-ink: black on white, the site in a band across the top so your saved articles are easy to tell apart in the Kindle library, and the date and time you saved it at the foot. It sets titles in Thai, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese and Korean properly too.
    • The verification code on your Kindle shows when you asked for it, in your own time zone.
    • The Send to Kindle setup is one card with three numbered steps, and the field for your Kindle address is easier to find.
    Fixed
    • On pages with ads or embedded videos, opening the panel no longer makes Chrome announce that Web to File started debugging the browser, and ads no longer turn up as pictures in your exports. Embedded charts are captured when you export.
    • Images further down a CNBC article are no longer left out as blank boxes.

    Save to Google Drive

    New
    • Save to Google Drive. Connect your Drive once, and the Send button next to Download puts the export into a "Web to File" folder in your Drive, in any of the four formats. The file goes from your browser to Google, not through any server of ours. Web to File can see only the files it creates there, never the rest of your Drive.
    • Files sent to Drive can be opened again from the export history. A send that did not go through stays in the history with a Send again button.
    Improved
    • Settings lists each place a file can go as one row with its status, and the details sit on their own page.
    • Opening a file from the export history shows the document alone, filling the tab.
    Fixed
    • The side panel no longer switches to a page in another window, such as a sign-in popup.
    • Switching tabs right after opening the panel no longer leaves it blank.
    • Switching tabs after the panel had sat idle for a while could leave it open, showing the new tab’s page. It now closes on every tab switch.

    EPUB, ChatGPT conversations, and single-page PDFs

    New
    • EPUB export, alongside PDF, Markdown, and image. Images are embedded, so the file stays readable offline on a phone or an e-reader. Chapters follow the page’s own headings, and a cover is generated from the title and the site.
    • Export a ChatGPT conversation. The whole thread becomes a document, each turn in order with its speaker. Your own conversations and shared links both work. Long threads export in full, including the turns you have scrolled past, and code blocks keep their formatting.
    • Single-page PDF. A Layout option renders the article as one continuous page instead of separate sheets. Very long articles are still paginated, and the panel says so.
    • Header and footer on PDF exports, off by default. Each page carries the title at the top and the source URL with a page number at the bottom.
    • Nineteen paper sizes: A0 through A9, B4, B5, JIS B4, JIS B5, Letter, Legal, Tabloid, Ledger, and Folio.
    Improved
    • Two permissions dropped. Web to File no longer asks for access to your downloads or your tabs, and Chrome’s install prompt is shorter for it. Your "Ask where to save each file" setting is now respected.
    • Rebuilt export options and preview in the side panel.
    • Format and layout labels now appear in your own language.
    Fixed
    • Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text no longer goes missing from PDF exports on macOS.
    • Article mode no longer loses most of the page, or fails outright, on link-heavy Chinese, Japanese, and Korean articles.
    • Long lines of code wrap in PDF exports instead of being cut off at the edge.
    • PDF headers and footers show the address of the page you exported.
    • The paper size list shows every size, and the option menus are no longer see-through.
    • Rows of inline links in page footers no longer expand into one bullet per link.

    The panel opens in your language

    Improved
    • The side panel now opens in your browser’s language the first time you use it, instead of always starting in English. Chrome’s language is matched against the 160 or more translations that ship with the extension, and English is used when there is no match. Choosing a language in Settings still takes precedence.

    Save a page as an image

    New
    • Image export: save any page as a full-length screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, with your format choice remembered. Full Page mode captures the page as shown in the tab; Article and Custom modes capture the clean, formatted content, matching the PDF layout.
    • Export and print errors now appear as a readable message inside the panel instead of a system dialog.
    Improved
    • Links now look the same in preview, PDF, and image exports: blue with an underline, kept for readability.
    • The side panel opens faster and stays lighter in memory.
    Fixed
    • Storage is now freed properly: deleting or trimming export history also removes the underlying files, and leftover files from earlier versions are cleaned up automatically.
    • Markdown export no longer fails on certain pages with unusual publish-date information.
    • Full-page image capture no longer duplicates content on some pages or fails on very long pages on high-resolution displays; capture retries once automatically if it hits a temporary error.
    • Wikipedia pages now extract correctly: no more one-sentence results instead of the article, stray style text in exports, or "[edit]" links appearing in titles and content.
    • WebP export no longer produces an empty file on very long pages.
